What are the professional expectations of Generation Z? ServiceNow, a company that specializes in digitization and workflow management, has done some interesting research on the subject. As far as young Italians aged 18 to 25 are concerned, the aspirations seem clear: a permanent contract and a job in a large company.
The CDI is the most coveted by young people
The ServiceNow survey, conducted in October 2021 in France, Italy and Spain by Opinea, an independent research institute, examined a sample of 1,008 men and women between the ages of 18 and 25 who answered a series of 13 questions.
For 53% of the boys surveyed, the “permanent” contract remains the most popular, with a preference among women and residents of central Italy. Next, young people seem to prefer fixed-term contracts (18%), self-employment (17%) or seasonal/temporary work (6%). For 39% of young people, the “multinational” is the preferred workplace, followed by SMEs (20%) and startups (17%). To be attractive, the work must be “technological”: that’s it what 91% of respondents think. In addition, professional digital tools must be intuitive and easy to access, like those used in everyday life. Another interesting figure concerns free time: more than half of the boys surveyed (56%) is ready to earn less to have more. This aspect seems to be worth more for men (15%) than for women (8%), especially in central Italy.
Research has shown how the hybrid work is the preferred model by the majority of young people questioned (55%), while to stay in the company “salary and material advantages” are necessary prerequisites for 37% of the sample questioned, against a social commitment (22%). The image/reputation of the company on the Internet and other digital media is crucial for 92% of respondentswhile 34% of the sample say they prefer an individual office, compared to open spaces (30%) and co-working spaces (14%).
Philippe Gianellihead of ServiceNow Italy, said: “ServiceNow is a company that is constantly dedicated and committed to the future and technology, but also respectful of the environment. In this, it can be said that we share the same values as Generation Z and we work to enable other organizations to achieve these goals as well. However, we realize that the game of business success is not only played through the best technology, but also through collaboration and the acquisition of the best talent. Young people do not seem to have changed much in their wishes about the future of work compared to past generations, which may come as a surprise, but another fact is also important, namely the fact that they want to work in technology companies that provide tools that are easy to use and intuitive, as well as socially friendly. This is why it is important for organizations to complete their digital transformation as soon as possible and stay on top of the times, so as not to lose the challenge of acquiring talent and incur an inevitable penalty in the business”.
