Google launches voice and video calls on Gmail: how they work

All users of gmail will receive in the next few weeks in-app voice call and video call functionality. The announcement was published by Big G in these hours, which clarified that the rollout has already started but will probably end in more than 15 days on all devices worldwide. All Google Workspace, G Suite Basic, and Business users will receive the feature, along with all users with personal Google accounts.

To date, it is already possible to make calls from the Gmail application on iOS and Android, but users must send an invitation to a Google Meet video conference, via a more complex and less intuitive procedure. However, as soon as the distribution of the new feature is complete, users can simply tap the new icons at the top in individual chatsi, once the Google Chat section has been activated in the application: the first in the form of a telephone handset will launch a voice call with the interlocutor on the screen, the second in the form of a camera will launch a video call.

Gmail, in-app calls and video calls are coming

Users who make a call from the Google Chat app will also come redirected to Gmail app, which highlights Google’s intention to put Gmail at the center of its communication platforms, not individual specific apps. Currently, the change is planned for one-to-one conversations present in the chat screen on Gmail, which can be enabled through account settings (section generalsvoice CatsShow tabs Chats and Spaces).

This is primarily a feature that Google targets on teams that are “starts to return to the office, while others work remotely”, with the ability to support the new hybrid working needs of the working world with a single application. However, the novelty will not only be available for professional accounts, but also for the personal accounts of each user. Thanks to the Gmail Chat screen, users will be able to switch from a call to a video call and vice versa whenever they want, finally returning to the text conversation without ever leaving the application.
