Forwarding is a useful new feature. With Handoff, you can start writing an email on your iPhone or other iOS device, and you can pick up where you left off on your Mac; Or create a report in Pages on your Mac and add the finishing touches with your iPad on the train to work. Here is how to configure and use the Handoff function.
Transfer configuration
1 – To use this feature, iOS devices must be running iOS 8 or later and must not be older than an iPhone 5, iPad (4th generation), iPad Air, iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display, or iPod touch ( 5th generation). Macs must be running the Yosemite operating system or later.
2 – Your devices must also be signed in to the same iCloud account. On an iOS device, open Settings and tap “Connect to your iPad / iPhone” and sign in. If you’re already signed in but need to use a different account, scroll down and tap Sign Out.
3 – On your Mac, open System Preferences (from the Apple or Dock menu). From there, click on iCloud (middle row, left side). Sign in with your Apple ID and password. Again, if you need to sign out and use a different account, there is a link.
4 – Activate the transfer. In System Preferences, click General (top left corner) and enable the option labeled Allow transfer between this Mac and your iCloud devices. On an iOS device, go to Settings> General> Transfer. Activate the Transfer option. If it is missing, your device is too old.
Using Handoff on macOS and iOS
1 – If you have a document open on your Mac and want to continue working on it on an iOS device, the app you were using on your Mac is placed in the iOS Dock and identified. Here you can see the Safari app on an iPad, with the Handoff badge.
2 – Tap the icon with the badge and the app will open, with the document, web page, or anything similar you are viewing on your Mac opening automatically. In Safari, as seen here, it opens in a new tab and doesn’t close what you were looking for the last time you used your iOS device.
3 – To retrieve a document on your MacBook using Handoff, navigate to the Dock and on the left you will see an app icon with the badge of the device on which you last edited the document in question. Click on it to launch the application and open the document.
4 – Or use the app switcher. Hold down CMD and press the Tab key to invoke it. Keep tapping the tab to browse open apps. Again, if a transfer document is available, it is displayed here with the icon of the app that created it identified with the device on which it was last edited.
