PlayStation 5, these photos show AMD’s SoC in all its beauty

Fritzchens Fritz, a hardware enthusiast who takes high-resolution images of various processors, posted his work on sul PlayStation 5 System on Chip (SoC), exposing the internal parts of the processor and revealing the arrangement of billions of transistors.

AMD’s SoC, codenamed AMD Oberon, features a unique design with Zen 2 and RDNA 2. At the heart of the system, eight Zen 2 processor cores with hyperthreading enabled, they operate at 3.5 GHz. Additionally, the SoC combines the processor cores with 36 RDNA 2 Computing Units (CUs), which operate up to 2.23 GHz. The high frequencies of the GPU allow the console to reach 10.3 TeraFLOP computing capacity.

The matrix blueprints, which you can see above, show how AMD arranged the billions of transistors across the chip. GPU cores sit in the middle, spread across multiple CUs to form an integrated graphics engine. Next to them reside the aforementioned Zen 2 cores, followed by the silicon dedicated to I / O.

There is a clear indication of AMD’s Infinity Fabric, which connects the entire chip, and the L2 cache. The memory controller GDDR6X and the physical layer interface (PHY) are visible on the edge of the SoC, where data flows in and out of the processor. On closer inspection, you can also see the L3 cache. You can see all the photos taken in the Flickr folder by Fritzchens Fritz.

This exact chip is the heart of the AMD 4700S Desktop Kit. The kit is indeed equipped with the same processor present in the PlayStation 5, in addition to 16 GB from memory GDDR6. It is however slightly different from the chip present in the PS5, as the built-in RDNA2 graphics engine is disabled in this case. This AMD desktop kit is believed to have originated from faulty SoCs intended for the Sony console, where the graphics were not functioning properly.

Presumably then, any chips that did not reach full functionality were reused for this desktop kit, meaning the manufacturing process was more difficult for RDNA 2 graphics. In any case, as announced in July, whether it is a close cousin of the PS5 chip. , or a “bad” version of it, AMD’s Desktop 4700S kit will soon hit the market with 80 different systems.
