According to rumors from China (via video cardz), AMD can meet future Intel Core i3 Alder Lake processors with “Renoir-X“. The project, as its name suggests, must revolve around the architecture Zen 2. The new chips are rumored to be completely similar to the Ryzen 4000G for the OEM market, except for the Integrated GPU that needs to be disabled.
Fully compatible with platforms AM4 commercially, the rumored Renoir-X processors should boast 4 Zen 2 cores with active SMT (8 threads). In reality, very little is known about the actual configuration, but according to Chinese leaker Enthusiast Citizen, a rather reliable source in the past, we won’t see 8-core Ryzen 7 models present in the current 4000G series instead. .
AMD is not introducing Ryzen 3 processors in the Ryzen 3 3100 and 3300X models from mid-2020, but even Intel did not offer a Core i3 with the “Rocket Lake” Core 11000: therefore the time for a renewal also on the low end of the market seems close (early 2022).
Regarding the medium and high end, AMD’s response to Intel Alder Lake CPUs foresees the arrival of Zen 3 processors with 3D V-Cache technology, already in production and which will be officially presented at CES 2022 in early January.
As for Zen 4 processors and AM5 platforms, we will have to wait until the second half of the coming year, when the new X670 and B650 chipsets will arrive with processors supporting PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 memory (according to the leaker, the new platforms will not allow the installation of DDR4 memory, contrary to what is possible with Alder Lake and probably the successor Raptor Lake).
