sony announced theacquisition from the development studio Valkyrie Entertainment. Founded in 2002, the developer is a bit of a handyman industry: not known for specific video games, but has supported several teams in the creation of great works.
Formerly the Valkyries worked with Sony, Microsoft and Riothelping to shape productions such as God of War, Halo Infinite and Valorant. Prior to today’s announcement, Valkyrie Entertainment worked closely with Santa Monica Studio (Sony-owned studio) on God of War: Ragnarok.
The acquisition follows other operations that have taken place during the year, more or less important and which include names such as Bluepoint Games, Firesprite, Housemarque and Nixxes: there are 17 software companies under the umbrella of Sony Studios. 2021 was a special year given that in the 2010-2020 period, the company had only acquired Sucker Punch Productions and Insomniac Games.
It is not difficult to think that the acceleration of Sony’s acquisitions has to do with the great “voracity” of Microsoft, manifested in particular with the acquisition for 7.5 billion dollars of the parent company of Bethesda, ZeniMax Media, in 2020.
The recovery was announcement by Herman Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios. “Valkyrie’s diverse abilities will be welcomed by all teams at PlayStation Studios, and it will ensure that we continue to focus on developing extraordinary gaming experiences.”
“Since 2002, we have contributed to over 100 titles including major PlayStation franchises such as God of War, inFAMOUS and Twisted Metal“, said Joakim Wejdemar, President and Founder of Valkyrie Entertainment. “We are excited to continue our relationship with some of the most talented teams in the world, expanding and contributing to the portfolio of fantastic games available to PlayStation fans.”
A now-deleted Valkyrie website page stated that the team was in the process of co-developing several AAA games and “two as yet unannounced in-house titles”, although plans could change following the Sony takeover.
