Long ago Formula E he had one i8 as a safety car, a wonderful car but “only” plug-in hybrid. It’s time for a change, especially now that all-electric cars can easily do multiple high-performance laps, without worrying about range.
Thus, after a short parenthesis of the Mini-electricthe role of safety car is provided by Porsche Taycan Turbo S, the first electric of the German company which, thanks to its great success, continues to produce versions, such as the latest Sport Turismo. A choice certainly fair, and also easy if you want, since no modification of the powertrain was necessary. In fact, the Taycan was born as an electric car intended for mass production, but also with decidedly sporty features.
The version used as a safety car has a power of ben 560kWa torque of 1,048 Nm and a 93.4 kWh battery, which provides several hundred km of autonomy. Acceleration is also excellent, aided by the launch control system and dual-speed rear motor: 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds.
The car obviously sports a dedicated livery, which takes up the colors of all the teams in the running, and some functional modifications. Outside, there’s room on the roof for the traffic light array, controlled by the special panel added to the center console. Also inside the cabin we have some changes, thanks to greater security, such as a roll bar, sports seats with six-point seat belts and a fire extinguisher. The whole is completed by an advanced communication system, to dialogue with the direction of race. The debut will take place on January 28 and 29 in Saudi Arabia for the first race of the new season.
