The pictures show the USS Portland while firing a laser beam at a practice target placed on the surface. The snaps were taken in the Gulf of Aden in the Middle East on December 14.
First photos of the laser weapons of the future
The weapon is called Mark 2 Solid State Laser Technology Maturation Laser Weapon System Demonstrator MOD 0 and successfully engaged the target in testing last week. In a previous test carried out last May in the Pacific Ocean, the laser weapon system successfully neutralized a drone, as can be seen in the following video.
There United States Navy says this new laser system could be used to protect its ships from unforeseen air and sea threats, including explosive-laden drones used by Houthi rebels in western Yemen.
As seen in the photos, the laser weapon system was placed on the deck of the USS Portland. “Laser weapons are powerful, affordable and will play a vital role in future naval operations”said the rear admiral in 2014 Matthew Klunder of the Klunder Naval Research Office. “This particular weapon is still a prototype but destroyed our designated targets almost instantly”.
